I'm giving food

  • What can I list?

Anything still safe to eat that you won't use: cooked meals, bakery items, fruit and vegetables, packaged goods within date. If you would serve it to someone in your own home, it can be listed.

  • How long does listing take?

About a minute. You need a title, the number of portions, when it must be collected by, and the address. A photo is optional and is resized on your phone before it uploads.

  • What happens after I list it?

It appears on Find food straight away. When someone claims it you get a notification with their name and the time they said they would come. The listing closes itself once the portions run out or the pickup time passes.

  • Can I set a price?

You can list food as free or at half price. Half price is meant for bakeries and shops that cannot give stock away outright. Most listings are free.

  • Nobody claimed it. What now?

The listing closes at the pickup deadline and stops showing. Nothing is wasted by trying: list earlier in the day next time, since people look before they leave work.

  • Do I have to be there for the pickup?

Someone does. The recipient comes to the address you gave, at the time they chose. If you would rather not meet, leave it with whoever is at the counter and say so in the notes.

I need food

  • Is it really free?

Most of it. Listings marked Free cost nothing. Listings marked Half price show the price per portion on the tag, and you pay the donor directly when you collect.

  • Who can claim food?

Anyone who will eat it or cook with it. You do not have to prove anything or explain your situation. Claim what you can actually use, and leave the rest for someone else.

  • How do I find food near me?

Pick your district on Find food, or allow location so distances are worked out on your phone. Your location is never sent to us or shown to donors.

  • When do I get the address?

After you claim. Until then a listing shows only the city and district, so donors' homes and shops are not published.

  • I can't collect it myself.

Tick "Ask a volunteer to deliver" when you claim. A volunteer on that route may be able to bring it to you. It is not guaranteed, so claim only if you can collect it yourself should nobody take the run.

  • Something was wrong with the food.

Don't eat it. Write to us with the listing and what you found, and we will follow it up with the donor.

I volunteer

  • What does a run involve?

Collect from the donor before the pickup deadline, take it to the address the recipient gave, mark it done. One pickup, one drop-off, usually inside one district.

  • Am I paid, or do I pay?

Neither. You never pay for the food, and MealBridge does not cover fuel. Pick runs along a route you were driving anyway.

  • What should I carry it in?

A clean bag or box, and an insulated one if you have it. Cold food should stay cold and hot food hot; the less time it spends in between, the better.

  • How much time does it take?

Delivery runs are about two to four hours a week if you take them regularly. You choose which ones, and you can take none for a while without losing your place.

My account

  • Why do I need an account?

So the other person knows who they are meeting, and can reach you if plans change. We ask for a name, an email address and a password, and your district and phone number later.

  • Can I change my role?

Yes. The role you pick when you sign up decides what you see first, not what you are allowed to do. Write to us and we will change it.

  • How do I delete my account?

Write to us from the address you signed up with and we will remove it, along with your listings and claims.

  • Which languages does MealBridge work in?

English, Sinhala and Tamil. Switch at the top of any page; the choice stays as you move around the site.

Food safety

The rules for anything you list

These are the conditions you confirm when you list food. They are not paperwork: someone is going to eat it.

Freshness

  • Only list food that is fresh and safe to eat.
  • Check expiry dates before listing.
  • The food should look, smell and taste normal.
  • Do not list food that has been standing out for more than two hours.
  • Packaging must be intact and undamaged.

Temperature

  • Keep cold food below 4°C.
  • Keep hot food above 60°C.
  • Use insulated containers when it is being carried.
  • Do not leave perishable food between 4°C and 60°C — that is where bacteria grow.

Handling

  • Wash your hands before handling food.
  • Use clean utensils and containers.
  • Sanitise the surfaces you prepare on.
  • Wear clean clothing, and cover your hair where that applies.

What to tell people

  • Say when it was prepared.
  • List the ingredients.
  • Mark allergens clearly — people filter listings by them.
  • Add reheating instructions if it needs them.

What must never be listed

If any of these apply, the food does not go on MealBridge.

  • Food that has already been served or partly eaten.
  • Food kept at unsafe temperatures.
  • Food whose ingredients or preparation you do not know.
  • Damaged or opened packaging.
  • Food prepared in unsanitary conditions.
